2018.04.01 22:20 SaintRidley 30 Days of Women's Wrestling Trailblazers - #18 Vivian and Luna Vachon

This is the eighteenth part of a 30-day series looking at the trailblazing women wrestlers of yesteryear. This series is designed to be primarily about women wrestlers from prior to the 1980s, though there will be a handful of women from the 80s in the mix. I will be excerpting, with citations, from Pat Laprade and Dan Murphy’s Sisterhood of the Squared Circle repeatedly, as it’s the most comprehensive single source on women’s wrestling out there. I encourage you to pick it up, as it’s a fantastic read. This will be different from other 30-day series in that these will all be mini-essays. Gifs and video will be provided where possible, but please understand that such is not always available for some of the earlier women I will cover. I would also like to plug the new subreddit /QueensoftheRing for more discussion about women’s wrestling, past and present.
Vivian Vachon
Diane Vachon, best known by her wrestling name Vivian Vachon, was born on January 23, 1951 in Newport, Vermont. She was the youngest of thirteen children Her brother, Mad Dog Vachon (who debuted in 1950), was the one who recommended she become a wrestler. Her brother Paul was also a wrestler, and his daughter Luna would follow into the family business.
Vachon went to Moolah’s school to train and debuted in 1969. By February 1971, she was California Women’s Champion, and at the end of the year she defeated Kay Noble for the AWA Women’s Championship. An article in the December 1972 issue of The Wrestler magazine speculated that Vachon could be the one to finally unseat Moolah from her throne, citing Vachon’s “size, speed, and savvy” and adaptability in the ring (Laprade and Murphy, 109). In 1973 a documentary film about her and her family was made, called [Wrestling Queen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0VRbNRs6Zg). She retired around the time of the film’s release, intending to start a family.
In 1976, Vachon married wrestler Buddy Wolfe (no relation to Billy Wolfe. The marriage was short-lived, and by 1979 they had divorced and Vachon had married her second husband, Gary Carnegie. Being married to a high-profile wrestler had its drawbacks – Carnegie was part of the Canadian military, and believes that he was passed over for promotion because some of her brothers were members of the Communist Party of Canada. Her son with Carnegie, Ian Carnegie is an accomplished arm wrestler.
Vachon returned to the ring in 1986 as part of her brother Mad Dog Vachon’s retirement tour, primarily wrestling Candi Devine and The Lock, before retiring again in 1987.
On August 24, 1991, Vachon and her nine-year-old daughter Julie were killed in a car accident when a drunk driver ran a stop sign and plowed into their vehicle. Vachon was forty years old. Vachon was posthumously honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club in 2006 and inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015.
Luna Vachon
Vivian Vachon wasn’t the only woman in her family to take up with the wrestling business. Born Gertrude Wilkerson on January 12, 1962, her step-father Paul “Butcher” Vachon adopted her upon his marriage to her mother when she was four years old. In a family of wrestlers, she grew up playing in the ring after shows, picking up informal training along the way.
Vachon’s family tried to keep her out of the business, believing at that time that it was too dangerous to be a woman in the business (and her father saying “it’s not even a business for men”). Even Andre the Giant, who took her on a trip to Paris, tried to warn her away. She wouldn’t have it, though, and her aunt Vivian and her husband Buddy Wolfe began training her when she was 16, and her father sent her to Moolah. She had her first matches when she was 21, beating Peggy Lee Leather and losing to Donna Christianello. Vachon did not like working for Moolah, citing among other reasons Moolah’s high cut of the wrestlers’ pay and the fact that she sent the girls out to have sexy photos taken of them even if they were underage. Moolah also told her she was too small to be a heel. She left Moolah and went to Florida.
Her trademark raspy voice and aggression were modeled off her uncle Mad Dog, which caused many people, including wrestlers like Jake Roberts, to believe she was Mad Dog’s daughter. In Florida they first wanted her to be called Moaning Mona, but Nancy Sullivan (later Benoit) nixed the idea, saying Luna didn’t look like the type to moan, and gifted her the name Luna. Nancy also was the one to shave Vachon’s hair for the first time. She made the rounds, touring Japan, Puerto Rico, Dubai, and all over, working a little in the AWA, teaming with Cactus Jack against Madusa and Eddie Gilbert in the final match of the Gilbert/Jack feud and some indie promotions (where she teamed with The Lock as the Daughters of Darkness) before debuting in the WWF in 1992. Vachon debuted at Wrestlemania IX, aligning with Shawn Michaels against Sensational Sherri. The rivalry in WWF was short-lived, and thus was the eventual pattern established for her in WWF: Luna Vachon would always have major success just escape her grasp.
She would be paired up with Bam Bam Bigelow, and they wrestled Doink and Dink at Wrestlemania X. Bam Bam’s wife gave Vachon a birthday gift: a tattoo of the cracks she had previously painted on her head, so the paint wouldn’t keep rubbing off on Bam Bam. A few weeks later she was included in WWF Raw for the Super Nintendo, making her the first woman to appear in a WWF video game as a playable wrestler. By Summerslam she had aligned with Bull Nakano and would marry Vampire Warrior in October, who would come to the WWF as Gangrel, before leaving the company for a brief period. She occasionally worked with Alundra Blayze in this period, and Laprade and Murphy relate how Blayze (Madusa) claims to have tried to get the belt to Vachon:
I was the champion at that time and wanted her to win it,” Madusa said. “People in the back said, ‘No, Alundra. You’re keeping the title.’ I said, ‘Well, we are in Luna’s hometown, and she deserves it. Can’t we just do her a favor?’ They wouldn’t go for it. So I told Luna in the dressing room that I wasn’t going to kick out or anything. I told her she should just take the belt. She sat there and cried. She told me nobody has ever suggested or done anything like that for her. We went to wrestle. I knew the repercussions I would get later; still, laid there, but the referee wouldn’t count. It was deplorable. The poor kid never got a solid break. The night ended, and I left with the title. I felt really bad for her. (Laprade and Murphy, 209).
Vachon, in her and Gangrel’s joint shoot interview, has a more negative opinion of Madusa, calling her a “Drano-drinking douchebag” who was jealous that Luna was in a video game. She goes into extensive detail about her problems with Sable in the interview, and she and Gangrel both call Moolah a pimp as well. It’s linked in full below and I recommend you check it out, as it’s got many great stories in it, including a time where she and Gangrel got fired for fifteen minutes because Road Dogg tried to start trouble between her and Jacqueline, leading to Vachon punching Jacqueline in the locker room. She and Gangrel give a lot of praise to Jacqueline, crediting her as a tough woman and great wrestler, and also to Molly Holly for being a genuinely good person.
She worked with ECW in 1995-1996 and WCW in 1997, challenging for the ECW Tag Team Championship alongside Tommy Dreamer and wrestled Stevie Richards in the first intergender cage match. In WCW she feuded with Madusa, and in November of 1997 she returned to WWF to pair with Goldust, leading to her matches with Sable. Vachon was supposed to win the title from Sable, she says, but Sable would conveniently not have the belt with her on the days she was supposed to lose it. Working with Sable grated on Vachon, who wanted to help her learn at first, until Sable revealed she had no intention of learning. She says that after the Wrestlemania XIV match, she came backstage to no reaction from management or anyone, despite having carried Sable to the match of her career. The moment Sable came backstage, though, people were falling all over themselves to congratulate her for doing so well. Vachon left Gorilla and cried, and only Owen Hart (whom she later says was “beautiful and real”) took the time to stop, cry with her, and tell her she did a good job.
Vachon would later be part of the Oddities, before another run in the women’s division where she got a few title shots but never won the title. After her final WWF run, Vachon worked primarily for independent promotions before retiring in 2007. Many wrestlers have extolled her virtues. Lita cites her as a great influence in her autobiography. Missy Hyatt relates how brave she was: “She was willing to beat up a drunken New Jack for disrespecting me. I would like to think that Luna is in heaven, since the devil was afraid that she would take his spot” (Laprade and Murphy, 212).
Luna Vachon was found dead at the age of 48 on August 27, 2010 of a painkiller overdose. A few weeks before her death, Mick Foley says, a fire destroyed Vachon’s house and destroyed all of her physical reminders of her wrestling career. Foley encouraged fans to send memorabilia from her career to her Post Office Box to help her replace the items. He has no idea if anything reached her, but he hoped that they helped her find comfort.
In 2009 Vachon was honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club with their Ladies Wrestling Award. She was posthumously inducted into the Women Superstars Uncensored Hall of Fame in 2011. An annual women’s wrestling tournament, the Luna Vachon Memorial Lunacy Cup, has been held since 2011 by Vendetta Pro Wrestling in honor of Luna Vachon’s influence on the industry, and since 2015 has been held in conjunction with the annual Cauliflower Alley Club banquet.
I’ll let this end with an extended quote, transcribed from near the end of the joint shoot with Gangrel:
Luna: There’s good and bad in everybody; we’re not above being bad. But there’s a lot of people that are – that don’t help our business and make it harder to go down the road than easier. And this business used to be a family business, and that’s where I come from, and that’s where I like to believe that my husband comes from, and it’s nice when you can see people that appreciate your abilities in the ring and appreciate the person that you are outside that are an asset to the business because of who they are in and out of the ring. In WWF there was a time when I would end up being in hotel lobbies until 2 in the morning, signing autographs because somebody’d make a comment like ‘Oh, she’ll be a bitch too, just like Chyna and Sable was - were’ as they walked through the lobby, apparently being mean to the fans, the people that put… put our bread and butter on the table, and I just don’t see—
Gangrel: You were really good about it. You were always – I’d get hot at her, I’d go ‘Where are you at,’ I’d call her, she goes ‘I was in the lobby,’ you know. I didn’t… I thought she was working me, you know, I knew every trick, but…. Actually, when I started traveling, I’d see she would sit down there until 2 in the morning, make sure she’d sign everybody’s stuff because they would go ‘Well, you know, they wouldn’t do it, they were so nasty, and they cussed me out’ and I’m like [raises eyebrows and shrugs], so she would always go around, trying to make up, you know, so wrestling didn’t have such a bad name.
Luna: Make up for the women of the WWF, and instead of—
Gangrel: Rocky was always really good about signing autographs too, like—
Luna: Rocky was great about that. Instead of Vince realizing that that’s somebody that’s an asset to your company, it seems like the girls that were being nasty to the people was the people that, um, ended up going the farthest. I’ll never understand all of his psychologies, it’s not mine to. It’d be too hard.
Gangrel: [unintelligible something about luggage?]
Luna: It’d be too hard. But it’s… it’s… it’s… I think if I had a company, I think I’d want a whole bunch more Lunas than he’s got.

2017.06.13 23:14 subwayprophecy a shitpost on Canadian Music

I was talking to Sully and Nova and this came up in conversation.
The CRTC - Canadian Radio and Television Council - have laws on how much content can be non-Canadian and broadcasted over radio and TV. This leads to some interesting TV shows (like Royal Canadian Air Farce, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Due South, Street Cents, many others but yeah) and on top of that, it includes the thing I dive more into, bands.
Since a certain percentage of content must be Canadian, it leads to artists dominating radio here and never making a peep across the border.
So here goes, boys, the Big Ass List of Music You Should Like But Don't Because Your Country is Strange.
Okay, after all that I'd like to add: this is in no way a complete and comprehensive list. I haven't so much as touched on famous bands like the Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Neil Young, Classified, April Wine, the Arcade Fire, Our Lady Peace, etc etc etc.
tl;dr: splash has saved his shitposting for like two years and now everyone gets it at once

2016.11.09 07:57 audiotjradio The Foreign Stars Of Lucha Libre - Part Two: CMLL and It´s Long History (2000-2016: Part 4)

-Jushin Liger came to defend his IWGP Jr. belt against Shocker in his first CMLL show, that was the first of various trips that have seen him in his traditional version winning CMLL Universal Championship or in his evil rudo version that was one of his longer stays. He still amazes the crowd and is one of the few that actually is well promoted as a legend.
-Of note: In one night at Arena Mexico in the third match, suddenly there was chaos at the arena because a AAA wrestler group without any notice invaded the ringside area to the shock of the crowd. This was later revealed as a cross promotion for a Televisa sponsored show called Padrisimo on Fathers Day at Plaza Mexico with the two companies working together at Televisa will, despite the non-existent goodwill from both parts. Also, despite constant tries from Antonio Peña to make up and work together. The show bombed totally and they only did something in 2010 for a special match at a Teleton show. They never tried something, going as far to the extent that when Antonio Peña died, CMLL refused strongly to aknowledge his passing or his past history with the company.
-Nosawa Rongai was a japanese young wrestler that came to CMLL with also not much of a fanfare. First he used the mask of Super Cacao which he promptly lost and had a midcard run, until the new CMLL-NJPW deal made him a sudden main eventer and alongside Masada (not the american deathmatch wrestler) had a hair match feud against Negro Casas and Satanico losing and getting a shave. He also shockingly won the CMLL Welterweight Championship. He had a good run at IWRG and had a cup of tea at AAA, but then went back to Japan and has not come back, after a rough situation during one of his trips.
-Secret Sasuke was an antagonist for The Great Sasuke and came to Mexico for one match. Behind the mask was Masao Orihara who had runs before as part of Koga and Iga and on his own name. Sansiro was a young wrestler that came with Secret Sasuke, he later became a huge fixture at DDT.
-Mr. Cacao was a japanese maskmaker from Japan that helped a lot of talent with their equipment and also wrestled. He had some runs in 2001, 2005 and 2011, mostly in the undercard as a enemy of veteran rudo Arkangel De La Muerte.
-From Panama came Veneno, the sinister handsome man that could cut a hell of a promo and had a lot of charisma. He came as part of Clan Boricua and when Gran Markus Jr was booted from the group, Veneno was the one thet lost his mask against Markus and then also his hair against the same man. Then he had some good success on his own winning some hair matches and then he went to a very great run as a top heel at IWRG where he ran a top group called La Corporacion. Still wrestles and has done a somewhat crazy gimmick as a karate holy man.
-When CMLL set up his new relationship with New Japan Pro Wrestling, they send a group of rookies to feud with the young stars. One of them, was Wataru "Puma" Inoue who had a interesting run as a junior heavyweight winning some championships. Katsushi Takemura was billed as...MUGA Takemura. He had a decent run with some feuds, losing his hair alongside Masada against Shoker and Mascara Magica, but won the hair of Mr. Mexico. He also had a good run as an invader at IWRG and back in Japan has done good at All Japan and some other companies. If i am not wrong he was also at MLW in US. A very young name came with them, billed as Shibata who was only here a couple of weeks. Of note, this man slowly has build up himself into a superstar and currently some say that he is the most brutal, fearless and stiffest strong style wrestler in the world, yes, it´s Katsuyori Shibata.
-Osamu Nishimura was a veteran star for New Japan that came as a one shot deal for a match with Dr. Wagner Jr. in Arena Coliseo, because at the time, Wagner was billed as the best mexican wrestler at the time and they wanted him to get a big win and it happened.
-Giant Singh is the man known as former World Heeavyweight Champion The Great Khali in WWE. He was brought as a huge atraction and natural enemy of Giant Silva...but as one could expect the matches were not good and he was back in Japan, where later tagged with Silva in NJPW.
-The Bulldog was a huge canadian wrestler that came as a reinforcent of the Clan Boricua. It was a short run and had a feud with Universo 2000 who took his mask. Then he resurfaced in IWRG losing the mask of Steel Man I to Mega and he lost the little hair he had left in his mostly bald head to Cerebro Negro. Then, he went to Monterrey as Cyber Vikingo...and yes, the big man lost that mask to El Hijo Del Santo. I saw that his original gimmick was Al Barone and if i am not wrong he was introduced once in AAA but never showed up again.
-Masada was a japanese wrestler (real name Kazuhiko Shoda) that had a nice run as a midcard evil japanese, but had his cup of tea main eventing some shows in hair matches. He also had a good run at IWRG and went back to Japan where he was succesful as tag partner or Nosawa and also doing some gimmicks like Pentagon Viper at ZERO-ONE.
-Heat was brought from New Japan, billed and pushed as a new sensation and the best junior in the world...and came to main event an Arena Mexico show against Dr. Wagner Jr, who was in his quest to show that he was the best mexican wrestler. Ha also had some other main event matches. He was good, but Wagner was put very strong in that match. Heat would reveal himself later as junior wrestler Minoru Tanaka or Minoru, having some great runs at IWGP, AJPW and other places.
-For years lightweight small wrestlers were having mostly midcard pushes, but a reborn interest was set up when the men later known as The Habana Pitbulls set foot in CMLL rings that change that perception. Billed as The Havana Brothers, the combination of Bobby Quance, Rocky Romero, Ricky Reyes, Pinoy Boy and Puma Kid set the CMLL rings on fire with excellent matches and pushing young man like Ricky Marvin, Volador Jr and Virus into respectability. They also feuded with Los Infernales in hell of matches. They became tweeners, sounding that strange in the world of lucha libre. They were set up as contenders in the tournament of the CMLL Superlightweight Championship that was won by Rocky. Rocky came back later as masked Grey Shadow, but he never felt confortable. Left to AAA for a short stint as part of Degeneration-MEX alongside Alex Koslov and Sean Waltman and had a nice run with Ricky in ROH and later in Japan with Koslov and now as part of Roppongi Vice. Reyes has had a lenghty indie run and currently is part of Lucha Underground. Quance keep wrestling mostly in California and left wrestling, enrolling as a Army Soldier. Puma Kid has been also in California and Pinoy Boy...you might know him as TJ Perkins currently in WWE, but with a long lucha story that landed him as Sydistiko on Masked Warriors and was Suicide in Tijuana the night that the Hijo Del Perro Aguayo incident happen.
-At a time that they were not exactly with a huge opinion on womans wrestling, CMLL give it a shot bringing from Japan two very good wrestlers, heel Commando Bolshoi and face Azumi Hyuga, both with good reputation in JPW and AJW. CMLL brought indie wrestlers Amapola and Marcela who were experienced in the hard japanese style to do a run with them.
-Shigeo Okumura was already a well experienced midcard wrestler from AJPW that came to CMLL in 2005, debuting the same night of Hector Garza surprise homecoming at Arena Mexico. At first he had an upper run but suddenly was relegated to mid-lower midcard status. Everytime japanese stars comes, there is a big push for loyal Okumura. In 2009 he was part of the No Limit invasion winning the hair of Maximo and to the shock of everyone, hijacking La Gran Alternativa tournament alongside Yujiro (yes, AKA as the current member of Bullet Club). He also won in a short one week run the CMLL Trios Championship with Hiroshi Tanahashi and Taichi. He has been in a midcard role since, working hard and helping the office with the NJPW relationship and putting over young guys.
-Of note: In 2005 a Monterrey small company called LLF began to be nationallly noticed because of the level of his talent. It was a company totally focused in ladies wrestling, giving breaks to local talent, but also to woman wrestlers from Canada and USA that wanted a learning curve and a opportunity. One that captured the imagination of the crowds was beautiful canadian Sarah Stock, known as Dark Angel. Veteran wrestler Lady Apache left AAA and became a building block for the reboot of a serious ladies division, but at the long view, Stock was seen as a possible superstar. She had a nice run in Mexico, as a great star that could have been push to even farther hights, but it was ok. She went to TNA as Sarita and had some interesting tours to US and Japan, being seen as a worldwide superstar. After her run, she went to WWE as a trainer in the Performance Center with no signs of a comeback.
-Hiroka was a young japanese lady trainee that came with the illusion of make it big...and she got her wish. Suddenly a rocket was put on her and took the CMLL Womans title and also the hair of Lady Apache in more than shocking upsets. She was paired with Mima Shimoda and was a star, even doing her comeback tour to her native country as a self-made superstar. She married fellow wrestler Demus 3.16 and had a baby, so she retired very happy with her career...she is still young and could be back...maybe.
-Hajime Ohara was a student of Ultimo Dragon that was mostly featured in Dragonmania and indie shows in smaller mexican arenas. Soon, he was part of CMLL in which he lost the NWA Welterweight title to La Sombra and was part of the lower midcard tier and had some runs before going back to Japan and have a nice career that still is current in NOAH.
-Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura came in 2005 as a tag team, one of the best in the world and they were also the young superstars of NJPW. They had a upper midcard run that could be better, even defending their IWGP Tag titles. They came back later. Tanahashi who was at the time of his return The Ace Of The Universe was hardly pushed as that, presented mostly as a foreign evil japanese. Yes, he won the CMLL Trios and Universal titles but also had some questionable defeats, not getting pushed as IWGP World Champion. When Shinsuke Nakamura came back, was on fire in Japan as Intercontinental Champion and also was treated as a upper midcard atraction, but had a fantastic feud with Sombra dropping to the man now known as Andrade Cien Almas the IC IWGP belt and then, doing some other dates but not at the level he has now in NXT, where he is one of the main building blocks of the WWE brand.
-Chuck Palumbo and Johnny Stamboli came at some point as part of Ultimo Dragon shows, but as The F.B.I. they had a run at CMLL that ended when Palumbo was hired back at WWE and Stamboli got injured. After WWE, Palumbo had a show in Tijuana and Stamboli became Rellik in TNA and was brought to a unhappy run in AAA.
-Marco Corleone is a great story of wrestling redemption. He was let go by WWE as Mark Jindrak and came as part of the F.B.I. with Johnny Stamboli billed as Marco Corleone, catching the eye of CMLL people at a Dragonmania show that brought him as part of a evil foreigner alliance with Kenzo Suzuki. After a rudo period, he had a connection with the crowd and became a very succesful babyface, deciding to be in Mexico forever. He was a star and suddenly he went to AAA and worked back in US as part of Masked Warriors. Noticing that he was more at home in CMLL, he came back and was a reborn star with a succesful trio called El Bufette Del Amor with Rush and Maximo, winning the CMLL Trios Championship (his only CMLL gold) . He also went into acting in soap operas and has had some outside inerests. He also was loosely affiliated to Los Ingobernables with Rush, Sombra, Naito and Mascara, leaving them later.
-Milano Collection AT was a Ultimo Dragon student that worked in Mexico at small arenas before coming to Arena Mexico as part of a Gran Prix show. He went back to Japan and worked as indie before having a nice run in New Japan that was cut short by injuries at a young age.
-Keiji Mutoh is one of the greatest of all time worldwide for what he has done as part of WCW, NJPW, All Japan and other places under his real name or his alter-ego...The Great Muta. He came as part of Ultimo Dragon´s Dragonmania, but was loaned for a friday night Arena Mexico show that had him having fun in his match. Next sunday it was supposed to be again Keiji Mutoh, but the people got a surprise visit by...The Great Muta in his Arena Coliseo debut.
-Kenzo Susuki was a very young japanese wrestler that had a debut dream in New Japan and was presented as a ace of the future...but then, after his run ended, he tried his luck in WWE with a decent run. He landed at CMLL alongside Marco Corleone and had a heated hair feud with Universo 2000 and Shocker that saw both international stars getting their heads shaved. After sometime, he left for AAA, where he started good but begin to fade all the way in the card. He went back home and has been a All Japan fixture till today, coming back once for the 2016 Lucha World Cup.
-Minoru Suzuki and Yoshihiro Takayama are two of the world most dangerous wrestlers with experience in shoot wrestling and MMA. Stiff and letal, they came as part of Dragonmania, but were loaned for some friday night shows and they mostly worked trios matches and were not able to showcase their strong style. Takayama came back years later as part of the Lucha World Cup with AAA. Suzuki has kepr showcasing himself very well at New Japan and NOAH.
-Alex Koslov was billed as a russian wrestler that was spotted wrestling in California and Tijuana and was brought as a rudo to CMLL, but as happens with young good looking wrestlers he became a lady favorite and went babyface with nice success. Then, he went to AAA and had sometime at WWE developmental before going to Japan, where he ended his career...by the moment.
-Hirooki Goto is one of the current top stars in New Japan, but at a time was a young wrestler that was sent to tour for some time at CMLL, were he had a midcard run with nothing of real notice, only him winning the NWA Jr. Championship in a torunament organized by Ultimo Dragon.
-Kensuske Sasaki is a japanese and worldwide legend, a master of strong style and winner of all the japanese top wrestling championships. He had his share of mexican tours for Ultimo Dragon, indie shows (also showcase as Power Warrior) and had a show at a friday Arena Mexico night, alongside partner and student Katsuhiko Nakajima, who now has gone into his own success history as NOAH GHC Heavyweight Champion.
-Mascara Purpura was a very young promising aerial wrestler that came trough Monterrey, born in Florida, cousin of Hector Garza, so he is related to the famous Garza-Segura dinasty. After a controversial run as Le Parke, he took the purple mask and had some promise and was a fearless innovating luchador, but never took off from the midcard, leaving CMLL and doing stints at Lucha Libre USA, IWRG, Monterrey and recently in CHIKARA and US indies. He still is very young and if he wants, still can get a big shot.
-Aurora was a young canadian wrestler that came and was still on the learning curve, but suddenly she dissapered...only for a masked lady called Goddess debuted with some expectation that was underwhelmed and she did her best in the opportunity until losing her mask against Amapola and slowly fading away.
-TNA...yes, CMLL tried an alliance with TNA , and tried is the best word possible. TNA had a very nice relationship with AAA since 2004, but the Konnan later issues and other things put a stop to that. They were rumors that they would be doing an alliance with CMLL and it happened. They were rumors about who was coming, thay talked about all the huge names. Well, the Grand Prix was bulit around TNA vs. CMLL. Team TNA had A.J. Styles, Alex Shelley, Johnny Devine, Chris Sabin, Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt. Who would you pick to win?...the logic says Styles, but no...Alex Shelley was the great winner...it was decided to build around the partnership in a feud between Ultimo Guerrero and parters against the Motor City Machine Guns...anyway, it´s not that bad sounding. Before this, there was a World X-Cup, a tournament like the others that Team AAA won before. This time, Ultimo Guerrero, Averno, Rey Bucanero and Volador Jr got the win, leaving as runner-ups the US Team of Kaz, Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin and Curry Man. The third installment was a CMLL Trios Championship match with Ultimo Guerrero, Negro Casas and Atlantis retaining against MCMG and Sunjay Dutt. After this match, the relationship ended quietly and in 2010, TNA was back doing bussiness again with AAA.
-Tetsuya Naito y Yujiro Tanahashi were two young men known as a junior tag team called Team No Limit in NJPW, but where sent for a long stint were they got to be a top rudo hated foreign CMLL team alongside Okumura hijacking the Gran Alternativa tournament, which was won for Okumura as the rookie and Yujiro as the mentor, something that was bizarre, because Okumura was a veteran. They had a reign of terror until Texano Jr and Terrible got the best of them sending them back to NJPW bald after losing a hair match. Yujiro would be back for a small run in 2011 and Naito had two different runs, with the second one the most succesful, a soul searching tour that landed him as a member of Los Ingobernables, reiventing himself from neing called a main event babyface failure to the superstar leader of Los Ingobernables De Japon and a World Champ, while Yujiro landed a spot as the first japanese member of Bullet Club.
-Jon Strongman Anderson was a american huge wrestler that was sent by New Japan and Shocker named him a part of Los Guapos, mostly as a main event atraction with not much stuff than ragdoll his opponents. There was an intent to bring him an enemy, but did not cought fire. He had some stints, but nothing more than ok.
-Taichi was another young New Japan young lion that was sent to learn. He stand out mostly because of his blond long hair and exccentric personality, that landed him in a feud with exotico luchador Maximo who at the end took his hair, but also was part of a CMLL Trios title short run with Tanahashi and Okumura. He now is part of Susuki-Gun.
-Durango Kid was a wrestler that was part of the New Japan american dojo in Calififornia and had some stints with Dragonmania before going to CMLL regular shows, as a opening card wrestler at Arena Mexico. He was having a run when he got fired because of Mistico leaving CMLL for WWE, it was said that his release was because he was the contact for the tryouts and that was not well seen by CMLL officials.
-Giant Bernard is the man also known as Prince Albert, A-Train and Tensai in WWE. But at a time, he had great success in All Japan and later at New Japan as IWGP Tag Team Champion with Karl Anderson as Bad Intentions. Well, during a time of "AAA/Indie invaders", he was brought as a atraction and had a short run that first showcased him as a face and weeks later as a rudo, but nothing out of the norm...maybe if he had put his body hair on the line...
-Yoshi-hashi was another japanese wrestler that came and had his own run at midcard level with some success, even having a small push in order to have feud him with Rush who shaved him in yes, a hair match. He went back to Japan and after a rough start, he is a young star for NJPW.
-Dallys La Caribeña is the sister of former star Veneno and wife of the legendary Negro Casas. A very athletic wrestler that had his run at kick boxing, she tried her luck at lucha and at first she tried as a babyface but never connected because of her very strong personality and style that did not fit the gimmick of a caribbean happy woman they wanted. So she changed to ruda and after losing her hair to Marcela, she struck gold as the CMLL Womans Champion and has a good run currently pushed as a strong champion.
-Ayumi Kurihara has being a recurrent visitor from REINA, the japanese company that has a relationship with CMLL. She has had some one-show runs and mostly has been featured in REINA working against the luchadoras.
-Ray is another joshi wrestler from REINA that came to continue the feuds with mexican talent over the CMLL-REINA International title, as well as another top main event talent like Leon and Syuri, who was won the CMLL Womans title and also Makoto. All of them had great matches and are working mostly with young talents who are over in Japan like Silueta.
-Namajague is another young japanese wrestler that became very realiable and in his long run...well..he run all the place from opening spot to main events and between and back and forth. The monster was put on a good pairing with Okumura and tormentented the team of Rey Cometa and Stuka Jr, who had enough and challenged them to a mask and hair double match that was won by the mexican team and as a exclamation point before leaving lost a hair match against Rey Cometa. He went back to NJPW and masked himself as Desperado, finding a more suitable place as part of Suzuki-Gun.
-Prince Devitt is an irish wrestler that became a big star in NJPW as a junior. At the time, he come for two runs, one of them involved a feud with Volador Jr. It is significant that after his Mexico tour he became the leader of Bullet Club and after that run, he came to WWE...you now him as the first ever Universal Champion...Finn Balor.
-Tama Tonga is son of Haku and at the time was one of the young stars of the future of NJPW. First came as a face for a small run, but then came as CMLL Tag Team Chmpion alongside Rey Bucanero with the team being billed as Bullet Club Latinoamerica and what it was said is that Terrible, Mephisto and La Comandante were part of the group, but as a CMLL tradition, it was never really done and it was a small run to drop those belts. He later came back for the Grand Prix with his brother Tanga Roa teaming as G.O.D. He was the runner-up of the 2016 Grand Prix losing to Volador Jr.
-Zeuxis is a young lady wrestler from Puerto Rico with mexican roots. She uses a mask but has a distinctive look, strong personality and a modern day style that clicks as a ruda. She is currently National Female Champion and despite some setbacks from injuries, she is booked strongly. Two sidenotes: She was invited to the CMLL show Informa as a guest, but she had to wait because of a Mil Mascaras interview that ran long. When she was introduced she has mad and was complaining of not being the principal interview. The other, is rumored that she had a tryout for WWE and could be considered for the coming soon womans tournament for WWE Network...she is great and looks like a big star.
-Thunder was a strong masked man from Australia that did not have a lot of background, but later appeared that he had some runs in his home country and in Japan. He was presented as a special atraction and they were hopes for him to be the next foreign babyface star like Corleone, but he was not that seasoned and was still learning. Since that plan was not a success, they changed him to a rudo and set him on a feud with Ultimo Guerrero, that was slated to get his mask on the line against the hair of Guerrero but suddenly, the mask man was not around to a total mistery about his whereabouts. It was revealed that he was battling stomach cancer, dying some months ago at a very young age...a very sad story.
-Bushi is one of the promising young stars of japanese wrestling and also had a small run, mostly as a upper level, but not much. Now he is a big part of Los Ingobernables De Japon.
-Strongman japanese star Tomohiro Ishii also came for a run, but, despite now being a upper card man and having some success, was put on the lowercard level of Arena Mexico shows. After that run, he has come back to his homeland stronger than ever winning the Never title and had a small run with the ROH TV title.
-Kamaitachi was a young lion from New Japan for a learning trip...and boy, did he really learn. From the lowercard level slowly begin to show that he was a special talent and struck gold with a feud against young star Dragon Lee that saw him drop his mask, but beating him instead for the CMLL Superlight belt. The matches were some of the best wrestling seen on 2015 and after his run ended and despite losing his hair to Maximo, he was set up as a future star. He went to a american run that make him hit big matches at ROH and PWG and now is the top Junior star in New Japan, winning the IWGP Jr. belt...hard work pays off big time.
-Heddi Karaoui is a french wrestler with shooter and amateur credentials that came mostly working as a independent guy for promotions like IWL, IWRG, TXT and lesser known companies. He also works for ELITE that at a time were running shows of indies and CMLL stars at Arena Mexico. Heddi was featured on some friday night CMLL shows and mostly for a singles match with Guerrero Maya Jr. It was most for depth of roster reasons his presence.
-Formula-1 racing young legend Lewis Hamilton came for a special CMLL sponsors show and well, he mostly came to a singles match between Mistico and Mephisto interfering in the match standing on the apron and be allowed to tag to Mephisto and give an impressive crossbody block to Mistico and leaving the ring celebrating.
-Fujin and Raijin were two young undercard wrestlers from NJPW that came for the learning trip. They begin under this names first loaned to ELITE and then with a lower-midcard run, mostly wrestling Blue Panther sons and younger talent. Strangely they were not asked or booked to put their hair on the line and now are wrestling in ROH, where they have been only wrestling dark matches.
-Tanga Roa is the brother of Tama Tonga, with whom he has the tag team known as G.O.D. and also is a member of Bullet Club. He had a run in WWE as Camacho and now, he is working alongside one of wrestling hottest acts. He came as part of the Grand Prix and a small tow week run with his brother.
-Sam Adonis is, in a fun fact, brother of WWE commentator Corey Graves and son of wrestler Dan Polinsky. After leaving WWE Developmental, he begin to tour England and then came to Mexico to DTU billed as American Sweetness. He had the intention of training the CMLL style, but was spotted and very quickly, the man now known as "El Rubio Fantastico" or "El Rudo De Las Chicas" debuted prior to the Grand Prix. Now is slowly moving up the card, waving an american flag with Donald Trump face on it for cheap heat. Some experts say that while being still a very young man, he is on the verge of future superstardom in US.
-Kushida is a young rising worldwide superstar as a former IWGP World Jr. Heavyweight Champion. Under his learning curve, he did tours to Mexico and USA, wrestling here for AULL and IWRG. He now came as a top guy, mostly for the Gran Prix and was loaned for the ELITE Tournament but mostly was used to put over Volador Jr as a top star, which diminished his drawing power with the crowd at the shows, instead of being presented as the star that he is.
-Canadian Big Michael Elgin is a former ROH Champion and IWGP IC Champion thet came billed as one of the top stars in the world. He was loaned to ELITE, where he won the World Tournament beating Volador Jr in the finals. Then he had a run as babyface in the Grand Prix and for next two weeks. At the end, he dropped a match against Ultimo Guerrero. Elgin showcased that he only is not just powerful, but an all around top star that later made history in the first ever ladder match in NJPW and still can do much more.
-Young Johnny Idol from New Zeland came as part of DTU shows, with already working at his country for some time. Then, he found himself booked at the Grand Prix show in what was tought as a small run has turn into a permanent role that even has taken him to be a contender already for the CMLL Historic Lightheavy title. He still has a lot to do and maybe, one day he can follow the steps of another young blond babyfaced guys that have been sucessful in other places after leaving Mexico.
-Matt Taven was sent to do CMLL shows to start the new CMLL-NJPW-ROH partnership and also to get some seasoning after a long recovery from an injury that has sideline him since last year before coming back to introduce his new team of The Kingdom. He has been very succesful as a tag team wrestler in both ROH and NJPW with Michael Bennett. He had at the end a small feud with Rush, who defeated him at the end of his tour.
-Also, as part of the CMLL-NJPW-ROH deal, Raymond Rowe, half of War Machine came to Arena Mexico and has been loaned for a match against Rush for Lucha Memes, a mexican indie company that will be also part of the international deal.
That is the list, some of them are hits, other are misses, but mostly because CMLL books things.
Like i said before, they have their bussiness model and sometimes are too stubborn to aknowledge things that are outside their universe (a lot like WWF operated in the 80's), even sometimes over their own partnerships and protect a lot themselves, even if sometimes the in-ring product is booked and presented in an outdated way.
They also try to protect what is their view of tradition and excellence of their style, they han a ban on extreme wrestling and from some years to date, on blood. Sometimes they open up a bit and do some good bussiness with bringing independent stars and getting some good runs, but as bussiness wise, they put the company hard, as the lifetime ban of El Hijo Del Santo is a proof of it.
But, well, no one has a 83 year old bussiness running because of being soft and easy, it´s because they are doing something good and there is no signs of ending soon.

2016.11.04 03:00 MandarinB Trouble in Paradise

OOC: Oh boy, what have we done... This is going to be a long storymode. A very long storymode. Honestly, I understand completely if no one reads it. But I cant find it in my heart to rewrite it a bit so it can be split into multiple storymodes. So, bookmark it and save it for a rainy day if you cant read it now. You were warned.
Cesari looked at the brand on in forearm, making sure no one could see it but himself. When his eyes finally strayed from it, he remembered he hadn't ordered the driver to begin the voyage. He roled up his sleeve and spoke in fluent Polish.
"Drive, Boleslaw. Niagara Falls."
In front of him, two demigods he hadnt actually met before his departure. Beside him, one he wished hadn't come on the trip at all. He could say he wouldn't be bored now, but he knew he wouldve been fine with a book. So instead of the back of the van having just a bookcase and a luggage, it had multiple luggages, a minifridge, what he assumed was a board game, and the previously mentioned bookcase.
He looked to Hope and the others to speak.
"How are you three holding up?"
Hope looked happy, despite being annoyed that Cesari didnt tell her he was leaving at first. Her eyes focused unto Cesari, before she started to look at their surroundings.
"I'm doing great!"
She then focused on the demigod sitting across from her.
"So... Who are you?"
The man didnt take offense to her manner of questioning apparently, as he cheerfully smiled. He turned the one sitting beside him and nodded curyly before answering her question.
"The name's Justin Clarke. Great to meet both of you."
The one beside him wasnt as noticeably cheery, though he also didnt seem to be annoyed. Built like a warrior, Cesari noted to himself as the man began to spoke.
"Nice to meet you too. I'm Eric, son of Heracles." He said, his eyes gleaming. "So, what are our plans?"
Knowing he had to explain some if not all of his plans, or lack of plans, Cesari spoke up.
"Boleslaw will drive us to the Canadian side of Niagara. Crystal-" He paused and cursed at himself silently for speaking her name aloud. "The Empousa is waiting there."
Hope seemed to immediately catch on to the name he let slip out. She gave a look to the others as to wrap up introductions.
"I'm Hope... and you still haven't told me what this is about." She folds her hands, now looking at Cesari. "So, who is Crystal and where are we going?"
Justin rubbed his chin and sighed, apparently a little disappointed he didn't know the answer either.
"I have no idea who Crystal is. All I know is that we're going to four different countries."
Eric on the otherhand, he ddint seem to care about the details. Cesari figured he was just here for the adrenaline rush. Eric grinned.
"And all I know is we're killing monsters, and get to travel. I'm more than willing to take those terms..."
Inside, Tiberius laughed at his incompetence. Now all two of three companons wanted to know aboutHe grit his teeth, before finally explaining. "Storytime, is it? Once upon a time I fell in love with a childhood friend. We had memories. First night together, and turns out she wasn't human. I was manipulated the entire time. I eventually killed her, but now she's back."
Hope put her hand on her mouth, surprised by the story. "Oh my gosh... I'm so sorry!" He could she felt really bad for him, because unfortunately she was sharing those emotions with the other three. Cesaei felt the voices argue in him, causing a minor headache.
Justin simply looked down to the floor of fhe van, most likely affected by Hope. Eric bit his lip, the twinkle leaving his eye. "Yeah, that... that sucks," He eventually decided upon.
He did his best to ignore Tiber's scoldings and August's remarks as the rest of group took turns pitying him. He spoke up once more, to change what they were thinking about.
"Anyways, from there we get on a plane, killing monsters in Salinas, Puerto rico."
This was met with a much better response then the former. Hope apparenyly always wanted to visit the island, while Justin and Eric were happy to get a chance to travel around the world killing monsters. He told them of the forms of entertainment and the refreshments in the mini fridge. As he put on his earbuds to listen to music, Hope pecked him on the cheek. He couldnt tell what she said, but she sure was happy.
The music became Coleus Sanctus, and he ignored Augustus doing vocals in the background. Eventually, he managed to fall asleep.
The entrance into the country was as uneventful as he couldve hoped. He had bribed a corrupt Canadian official many times before for arms smuggling, so bribing for safe passage of four teens was not an issue. As the arrived at the hotel, Hope and Eric rushed to the restrooms while Cesari and Justin got rooms for them. The hour after that was just preparation and rest, before Cesari rounded up the group members in his room. Cesari looked at the three of them, rings seeming heavy on his hands. He took out his phone and read the text conversation.
"In 30 minutes, we have to be on the boat tours of the Falls. She'll be there."
Hope, wearing an old shirt taken from her dad and a jacket, had a small bag full of fighting supplies and lipstick ready for use. "Well, then, what're we waiting for? Let's go kill Cesari's ex."
Justin held his baseball bat over his shoulder, obviously eager to get on with the action. "Let's do this."
The twinkle that was noticeable in Eric's eye since the start of the journey was now more of a glossy finish. "Yeah," he said, grinning widely.
Cesari grinned at their readiness to jump into danger with him. It was nice to have people helping this time around.
"It isn't likely she's there alone. She probably has friends. Leave her to me, but take your shots as the rest." He said, gesturing for them to follow as he zipped up his jacket.
As he turned around, they began to speak of their weapons. Hope had brought a bronzed machete given to her by her father, Justin spoke of his pyrokinesis, and Eric showed off his arsenal of bronze weapons inside his duffel bag. To be honest, Cesari replied to them without much thought, thinking too much on his revenge to care about what they were talking about.
When he opened the door, his thoughts were interrupted, as were the conversations behind him. Outside stood a young girl, probably in her preteen years. Her previously nice clothes were bloody, and there was a gash across her torso. He immediately recognized her as a victim of his outbursts. The airplane flight he made crash into a mountain. But the girl was far from alive.... Arae.
"You killed me."
There was a silence, even in his own head. Then he finally heard something, Hope. "...Cesari, did you murder her?" Hope sounded frightened and held her hand out to the girl. "Are you okay?"
He heard Justin mutter something under his breath, but it didnt really matter. He attempted to smack Hope's hand away and choke the girl. Both failed. Hope pulled her hand away, and the Arae disappeared. Hope immediately spoke out.
"Cesari. Explain."
Justin joined his voice to her's mere seconds later, though Eric stayed quiet.
"What are you trying to hide?"
Cesari grit his teeth, thinking of something to say. Then he decided on simply giving a half truth.
"..Arae are curses, visions from the dead. Probably some monster. It means they know we're here."
He turned to look at them, and saw them preparing. Hope' eyes had widened in shock, while Justin strengthened the flame in his hand and Eric pulled a knife out of his belt. As an argument rose up in his head, he forgot to listen to his group.
Four demigods traveling this far from camp. Youre an idiot if you seriously thought you wouldnt deal with the peskier monsters.
Killing monsters was the point, Tiberius. Its the whole reason we're out here.
Yeah right. You're here to get yourself out of camp. It reminds you of her, even if you dont want to admit it. You were begging for an excuse to leave.
We still have plans to complete on, before the end. You're wasting our time by being here.
To hell with 'our plans'. We all know we cant finish on them, so why not enjoy our life?
Both of you, shut the fuck up.
When he became aware of his own actions, he found gesturing for them to follow as he went to the elevator. Before the elevator button was pressed, the doors opened and two large Cyclopes came out. The argument in his head faded, his attention now drawn in by the danger. He heard Justin ask Eric ask if he was ready, and Hope say her piece. He would've worried for her safety, if he wasnt dead set on killing the damn things. He looked to the son of Heracles and saw that Eric was no longer there, having moved roughly one foot away from the two cyclops with a mad grin on his face as if waiting for some sort of explicit permission to stab.
Cesari tossed his shield ring at one of them, the ring becoming a circular bronze hoplite shield that was to give the Cylops head trauma. That was the explicit permission. His sword formed in his hands, and he prepared for another hit. As his companions all fought one yclops together, Cesari found himself parrying a dazed Cyclops' club.
That was when Justin staggered back, his bat taking most of the impact from one of the other cyclops' attack. Once he realizes that the other one has been dazed, he ignited a relatively large flame in his hand and sent a fireball hurtling toward the beast's head. The dazed cyclops stopped parrying as the flames engulfed him, and laughed as they died.
"Cyclopes are immune to fire, Demigod."
Yet as the monster roared in dazed laughter, Cesari tossed his shield ring in its mouth. It began to choke in horror seconds later as the shield expanded in his throat and decapitated him. As this haened, Cesari was singing under his breath.
"..in a circle did I sleep? Had I blasphemies to keep? The smell of sulfur in the air..."
He stoped as the cyclops became a pile of dust, and turned to look at how the other Cyclops had been dealt with. Though Justin seemed to be preparing to charge the wounded monster, Eric manabed to jump from the ground and stab his dagger in the roaring beast's throat.
The Cyclops roared, dying. The other had already disintegrated, his ear left as the trophy of the kill. Cesari planned to say a line, a lyric to make sure he remembered the second kill, but that was when he saw him. A man of bulky composition, more muscle than brain. He wore a military cut and multiple scars, but his beard indicated his army days were over. Then there was a hole in his chest where a blade had entered, and his legs were mangled.
"I tried to help you.. and you killed me."
Cesari stared, horrified at the sight. He shouldnt have been surprised, but he was. Could she really have sunk so low to get this Arae? Hope didnt seem to notice the peril the situation brought. How could she? She wasn't there for his childhood.
"Remember how you told me you'd always tell me the truth and not keep things from me? Now would be a good time to explain this." Hope said, before sighing and gripping her machete tight. "Sir... Are you alive?"
Her words went over his head. Cesari's reaction to the man appearing was to attempt to stab him. Each slash of the blade passed through him like he wasnt there, but Cesari was too caught up in the moment.
"How dare you? You deserve everything you got."
The slashes became faster and more fierce, though they still did nothing.
"And I thanked the gods I ended your life, every fucking day... Father."
He could hear a machete fall, and then Hope's sad reqction to his words. She hadnt known he was a killer, or a mass murderer for that matter. She probably wouldn't have accepted it, not like she had.
"You... You did what..? Cesari..."
Eric didn't say a word, but Justin had a reaction Cesadi could tell was shocked without having to turn around. "...you killed your own father?"
The Arae faded, and the weapon and shield became rings on his finger. He was tired and angry. He smashed his hand against the button to make the elevator doors open. He didnt look back at them.
"..I'll answer every question you need answered once Crystal is dead, but feel free to ask one on the way. Just get in here."
They walked in, and he heard as Justin tried to comfort a crying Hope. His head was filled with discussion, so he could barely hear what Justin was saying to her. What he could hear was when Eric finally spoke again. He didnt have a shocked or disgusted voice, just an even tone.
"Why did you kill your father?"
He couldnt even repeat what he had said. He rambled on about how his childhopd years went. Abuse and such. No, he was too focused on what was going on in his head.
I say we do what we did the last time, make her think we're her's. Kill her during the 'rest'.
No, never. The blonde escort had the gall to bring our father in the form of Arae. Take a note from literature, Cesari. Kill the pig, Slit her throat, and Bash her in.
I will kill her.. Cruelly if I can. I will make her pay, dont you worry.
He resisted the call of August and Tiber long enough to notice Hope crouching on the floor, tearing up. Justin scowled at Cesari as he walked over to Hope. Cesari did feel a tad guilty, though it didn't show.
"Hope... please look at me."
He said, ignoring the pain in his head, the arguing of the voices.
"I didn't know I was dating a murderer." She said, bringing her eyes to his chest.
He sighed, looking at her face. "I'll tell you what I can after shes gone, Hope. I promise."
She nodded. "I trust you." She said, managing to meet his gaze.
He nodded back, gettimg up and turning around. His head hurt like hell. Yet in it flowed the hundred different things that Hope still didn't know, and a lack of ways on how to word them. He felt himself slip away.. and then he couldnt breathe.
August smiled as he looked around. It was about fucking time. When the elevator reached the ground floor, he left it without a second thought.
Another Arae appeared, a young child. Her chest had a gash, but she turned invisible almost immediately due to August slashing at her.
"Yes Crystal, we get the point. Cesari killed them. But by the name of that Christian God's illegitimate son, we are going to be here for years if you make every single one of them pop up. So stop stalling, you blonde bitch."
With that, he continued his way outside, faintly smirking as he noticed Hope's reaction. "Cesari!" Hope said, clearly haven taken offense to the Jesus statement. "That was really rude!" Her eyes flashed with anger. "You sound odd, too. Clear your throat."
"Yeah, no."
He continued outside slicing at the many Arae as they appeared. Some were obviously demigod Warriors, others were clearly civilians. He didnt give them time to say how he killed them, he just kept going. He just wanted to get to Crystal. He'd end her life... preferably like the way Cesari had before.
His bloodlust grew so much, when Hope put a hand on his shoulder to ask for a explanation, he told her to ask later in a hostile manner. He couldve ended up saying something that would hurt her too, but then he saw what he wanted. A blonde woman in what looking like the outfit of an escort, plus a trench coat. Crystal.
Hope wasnt putting up with it though. She stomped her foot. "Cesari! Stop acting funny!" She then ran past him to the girl, accompanied by the cautious bat-wielding Justin. "Hello? Are you real?"
Eric, meanwhile, was rather less cautious. "You have twelve seconds before I stab you," he said cheerily, pulling his knife from its sheath and approaching with an earnest grin. August immediately decided he disliked the Heracles camper.
"Back off, Discount Heracles. She's mine."
Augustus said, putting a hand on Eric's shoulder.
Meanwhile, the girl pulled the trench coat away a bit, revealing one of her legs was bronze. She smiled seductively, her aura of alluring reaching all of them.
"Oh, I'm real. Though, you can touch if you dont believe, I wont mind."
Like a naive girl, Hope did. She put her hand on her shoulder, before looking to August. "If she's real, I don't want you hurting her, Cesari."
Eric's cheery grin grew even wider. "Discount Heracles I may be, but I don't go for amputees," he said, completely unaffected by the aura Empousai gave off. "Now, judging by the tingle in the back of my head, I'm going to assume that you're giving what we in the business refer to as express consent. That does tend to expedite the stabbing process, just so you're aware."
Augustus listened to the words, catching on to the meaning. The reason his head hurt, it wasnt just Tiberius quoting Lord of the Flies over and over. Crystal was affecting them. He let go of Eric and focused on Hope, glaring at the girl.
"Hope, dont be a fool. Thats her."
Crystal dropped the trench coat entirely, now just a girl in Lingerie. She put a hand on Hope, and August concluded it was too late for Hope to do anything helpful.
Then suddenly the headaches increased immensely, and he knew why. Tiberius' presence began to hurt him a lot more, even if the voice said little more than he did before. As a child of Psyche, people around Hope could sometimes feel her emotions. With such a shattered mind, all three personalities suffered when under outside influence. Crystal was affecting Hope, and therefore affecting everyone else, her powers amplified heavily.*
Eric, the tingle quite annoying but not actully impacting anything due to his Mental Fortitude, shrugged. "You asked for it..." he said, attempting to swing the steel knuckles on the knife's handle into the creature's active wrist.
August pushed him as he did it, making Eric miss completely. His head pain ensured, part of his brain desiring Crystal while the other part was arguing over emotion, giving him head pain. He was literally shaking.
"She's mine, Eric."
Crystal giggled, a brought Hope closer, kissing the girl on the lips. She must've realized the girl amplified her aura, and she was using it to her advantage.
"You know it took you long enough, Ces. Thought you ignored the call."
Hope had a late for fortunate reaction to the kiss. The girl was raised by a homophobic Baptist Christian church, and it showed when she punched Crystal in the stomach despite desiring her. After Eric realized August wouldnt let him fight, he went to help Hope get away from Crystal.
Crystal grit her teeth as Hope was dragged off, annoyed the girl would punch her despite feeling lust for her. She covered the spot and set her other hand on Justin. He immediately felt she was a cute and helpless girl that needed his help.
"For fuck's sake..." Eric muttered, satisfied with Hope and Cesari for now. "Hey, Justin, watch out!" he said, grinning again as he pulled him towards himself, his other hand brandishing the knife. "You come for any of them, I kill you. I feel like we've established this. Yes?"
Augustus meanwhile was placing his hands on his forehead, feeling like he was having a migraine.
Hope saw this and wrapped him into a kiss, still lust filled and obviously trying to focus on that. It had worked before, so she hoped it would work now. It didn't. He pushed hed off him and yelled at her. It was her fault and he let her know that. The head pains were so much, he didnt even know what he said. She looked a bit surprised and tears welled up in her eyes. "You said she was a monster, yes? Then what are you waiting for? Stab her!" Her eyes poured tears, and she dropped her machete and ran as far as possible away from him, hiding inside of an unlocked room on the other end of the building. Justin managed to clear his head long enough to follow, leaving August and Eric alone.
"Now, since my companions seem to be slightly preoccupied, I suppose that leaves you and me!" Eric said cheerily, spinning the knife in his hand. "For the record, this would've been much quicker had it just been the two of us, and I'm sure you're a very nice lady when you aren't trying to kill me." With those final words, he attempted a stab at her, grinning widely.
She backflipped out of the way, grinning back. "All work and no play, huh?"
Eric sighed. This was going to take a while, and the likely event of Cesari recovering and trying to force him away would only extend the process. "I take my job seriously!" he said, grinning as he approached, his arms outstretched in a friendly manner.
She gave a mischevious grin before she began wailing in distress, getting nearby civilians and tourist to get in the way between Eric and her. Meanwhile, August felt himself slipping. He was the hedonist, and the alluring aura told him to let her take ahold. Tiberius wasnt going to stand by quoting until they were entranced, and headpain continued until he looked like August was choking.
Then the coldest of the three, the one resembling the Cesari Crystal once knew emerged. He approached, allured, yet not in the way that was intended.
Honey, I'm home."
Eric sighed loudly, most likely realizing how the scene looked like to the mortals. Tiberius sympathized.. slightly. He attempyed barreling through the crowd.
Tiberius chuckled as he came forward. Crystal willed they let him pass, and focus on blocking and slowing Eric down.
"You've come to your senses and want to embrace me?"
He nodded, smiling.
"I remembered something you said to me... It's helped me so much."
She tilted her head curiously, and Tiberius began to sing under his breath.
"..at night while dressed as lover, I praise the morning star..."
"What, that I taught you to desire me?"
She asked mockingly as he got within reaching distance.
"Oh, I desire something from you. An urge no one can give me, and you barely have to do anything to fullfil it."
She giggled at that.
"Tell me, what did I teach you?"
He wrapped his arms around her, bringing her closer.
"Always sing during a kill. It keeps you sane."
He smiled, his ring becoming a blade. He wouldve enjoyed the feeling of stabbing her more if the blade haent poked through his leg too.
"You-"
"..I am the one you'll come to, a wolf in his best disguise. Dont say they never told you, that evil... evil never dies."
She let out a shriek that would be heard almost everywhere in the city, so loud that Hope and Justin came rushing back. Both asked if she had been killed. Tiberius grit his teeth from the pain that wasnt obstructed any more. The expanding sword made a cut in his thigh.
"Fuck... to answer your question, shes dead."
Hope sighed in relief. "Thank goodness... Are you feeling better? She made you act a bit strange." She didn't see the cut from how far away she was. Justin however, did. "Shit, that looks pretty bad..."
Eric unhooked a canteen from his belt, rolling his eyes. "That's why I don't like dramatic shit..." he said, passing it to Cesari. "It's Nectar. Drink up. A little. I need the rest for later."
Tiberius took the canteen, and took a sip of it. Not anymore though. He handed it back and put his hand on his wound.
"You, Hope right? What you saw? That was a nice combination of Crystal and you screwing Augustus over. Cesari hasnt been home since the sentimental elavator ride."
"...Uh. Who's Augustus? And you talk like you aren't Cesari." She's a bit flustered by the whole thing, and lightly stamps her foot and twists her hair again.
Eric dropped the canteen back onto his belt as he stretched. "We're the children of literal Greek gods. I think we can afford to be kinda weird..." he said, shrugging. "Still annoyed you didn't let me get a hit in, to be honest..."
Tiberius seemed annoyed at her for not understanding, and annoyed at Eric for thinking he wanted to hear his opinion. Very annoyed.
"It's always the same with those two. They get a girl, and they say nothing about how they arent in control 24/7. Cesari will do his explaining no doubt, but he'll bullshit you. He always does."
She looked offended when she heard what he had to says. "Cesari wouldn't do that! Besides, who even are you? And if you know so much, tell me what's going on!"
"Yeah, no. I killed the bitch that ruined me. Im going back in the cage so I dont deal with your voices directly."
There was no feeling of choking or loss of breath. He grinned as he left the remote controller up for grabs. Luckily and Unluckily, Cesari grabbed its metaphorical handle. He took a deep breath, looking around. He had no idea where he was or what had occured. He felt the pain of the cut, saw the running people and saw Hope's glossy eyes.
"I missed it, didnt I?"

11:00 AM - Fort Lauderdale Strikers vs Richmond Kickers

Fort Lauderdale Strikers (NASL)

Club History
As one of the members of the original NASL, the Strikers have a history that dates back to 1977. That team signed some of the world's finest players, including Gordon Banks, George Best, and Gerd Müller. After moving to Minnesota, a second Strikers team popped up in Fort Lauderdale in 1988, playing for six years in the American Soccer League (ASL) and the American Professional Soccer League (APSL). The current incarnation, founded in 2006 as Miami FC, rebranded into the Strikers before the first season of the new NASL. The Strikers have twice been NASL runners-up, losing in the championship game in both 2011 and 2014. More recently, the club made international headlines when Brazilian legend Ronaldo joined their ownership group. In 2015, the low-budget club shocked the league by once again making the playoffs for a second consecutive season, but fell short in the semi-finals.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers are 7-9 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. Their first appearance, in 2006, is infamous for a loss to the USASA Dallas Roma FC, which went on to defeat Chivas USA on penalty kicks. It took until 2008 for the Strikers (then Miami FC) to find their first win, knocking off Bradenton Academics and the Atlanta Silverbacks before falling to FC Dallas in stoppage time. In fact, in three meetings, the Strikers are yet to take down MLS opposition. Last year, Fort Lauderdale fell at this stage 2-3 away to Charleston.
Current Team
Fort Lauderdale started this season as strugglers, but have come alive over the past few weeks. Away wins at (then-league leaders) Carolina RailHawks and Rayo OKC have put them into 7th place, not bad for a team that had started out near last. The signing of former Leeds United and FC Dallas midfielder Ramón Núñez has sparked the Strikers: he's added a goal and two assists, including this knuckler against OKC. The resurgence of Canadian center-turned-right back Nana Attakora has also been remarkable. And I would be remiss not to mention left-sided wingedefender PC, who scored against the Cosmos in the 2015 playoffs and hit a belter of a free kick against Santa Fe in preseason.

Richmond Kickers (USL)

Club History
The Richmond Kickers are a historic name in U.S. soccer, having operated in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tiers since their opening game back in 1993. That makes them one of the oldest continuously operating clubs in the country. They've been crowned champions of the USISL Premier League (1995) and the USL Second Division (2006, 2009), but are still waiting for a first championship in the modern USL. Since USL Pro formed in 2011, the Kickers have been to the semifinals three times, but never beyond. Last year, Richmond just about managed to get into the playoffs, but fell to Charleston in the first round.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Richmond Kickers are 30-16 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. They hold the distinction of being one of the few current clubs outside of MLS to have won the Cup, winning in their first appearance in 1995, the final year before MLS kicked off. There were only four rounds in that tournament, and Richmond's main competition consisted of USISL and APSL teams. Assisting on the winning goal was Leigh Cowlishaw, now Richmond's head coach. In 2000, Richmond beat its first MLS team, defeating the Colorado Rapids 3-0 at home. In all, the Kickers have five wins over MLS opposition. In 2011, Richmond made a run to the semi-finals, and remain the last lower-league team to go that far. This year, a Sunny Jane free kick led a 4-0 win over Aromas Café FC to put Richmond into Round 3.
Current Team
At the moment of writing, the Kickers could use an energy boost, as they're sitting at seventh place in the USL Eastern Conference. Japanese midfielder Yudai Imura, who last year was using Sesame Street to improve his English, has given a huge boost to the Kickers, leading the team with three goals. But the team has been anchored by its defense, which has allowed multiple goals just twice in ten games this season, and has recorded five clean sheets.

The Matchup

Although the match hasn't even started, the first hurdle for each team came in finding a field to play it on. Richmond couldn't apply to host, having no venue available, and the Strikers' home field (but maybe not for long), Lockhart Stadium, is hosting an international friendly. Running out of options, the Strikers booked Broward College-South Campus soccer field for an 11 a.m. kickoff. Tickets are $5, free for season ticket holders. The Strikers have been playing out of a 4-2-3-1 lately with attacking fullbacks, and the Kickers are in a 4-3-3 (I think - correct me if I'm wrong). What's on the line? For the winner, a visit to D.C United in Round 4.

7:00 EST - Rochester Rhinos vs Lansdowne Bhoys

Rochester Rhinos (USL)

Club History
Another historic American name, the Rochester Raging Rhinos (as they were known until 2008) have been in operation since 1996. For the first ten years of their existence, Rochester regularly played in front of crowds of 10,000+. You can read all about the "Rise and Fall of the Rochester Rhinos" - how a team destined for MLS blew its chance. Although still a power player in lower-division soccer, attendances declined, and early league championships (1998, 2000, 2001) were confined to memories of better days. In 2009, Rochester had decided to join the new NASL, but self-relegated to avoid higher operating costs. In 2015, things finally started to turn back around. The Rhinos lost once all season and rampaged their way to the USL championship. After the end of the season, the club found new local ownership and updated its logo.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Rochester Rhinos are 38-19 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. They hold the distinction of being the only lower-league team to have won the Cup since MLS began. For all the league championships they have won, the Rhinos will always be first remembered for the legend of 1999, when a small team from Upstate New York did the impossible. In 2009, the Rhinos came close again, advancing to the semi-finals before being knocked out by D.C. United. Yet even still, they rarely fall to lower-league opposition. This year's Round 2 match against Southie FC was more of a demolition than a derby, as a clever Marcos Ugarte chip and an Asani Samuels hat trick led a 7-0 victory.
Current Team
The defending USL champions are sixth in the USL Eastern Conference, but have a nearly perfect record at home. Some of the 2015 championship roster was picked off by other teams: Alex Dixon moved to Jacksonville, Onua Obasi to Ottawa, Tyler Rudy to Puerto Rico, and Colin Rolfe to Real Monarchs, to name a few. And yet, much of the backbone remains. Christian Volesky and Asani Samuels can both expect to score goals, and Tony Walls leads the back line for a third season running.

Lansdowne Bhoys (USASA)

Club History
A regional club based in Yonkers, NY, Lansdowne Bhoys were founded in 1997 and compete in the local Cosmopolitan Soccer League. The Bhoys draw from Irish heritage, though they wear the hoops of Celtic FC. A recent U.S. Soccer profile on the team highlighted the fact that Lansdowne Bhoys are a community club, with deep links interconnecting the players, the board, and the people around them. ESPN, Irish soccer commentator Tommy Smyth has name-dropped the club during international friendlies.
U.S. Open Cup History
Prior to 2016, Lansdowne Bhoys had never made an appearance in the U.S. Open Cup. Now, they've become quite the Cinderella story, first knocking off the PDL's Long Island Rough Riders in extra time, and then defeating the USL's Pittsburgh Riverhounds on the road. Former USL player Stephen Roche and Irish youth product Sean Kelly headline a team full of players with day jobs.
Current Team
Last week, Lansdowne Bhoys won the Cosmopolitan Soccer League title for the third season on the trot. They beat out the New York Pancyprian Freedoms, who themselves made a run to the Open Cup's Round 2. The Bhoys conceded just 10 goals in 16 games, recorded eight clean sheets, and didn't lose a single match. Forward Daryl Kavanagh has been vital on the attacking end, picking up a goal against Pittsburgh in Round 3 and against the Freedoms in the title clincher.

The Matchup

The Rochester Rhinos' Open Cup match with Lansdowne Bhoys is being billed as "fan appreciation night" at Rhinos Stadium - not only will fans receive free admission, but they'll also be able to see some of the upgrades that have recently been made to the stadium. As previously mentioned, both sides have streaks waiting to be snapped - the Rhinos haven't lost at home this year, and the Bhoys haven't lost at all. Rochester will host the New York Red Bulls with a win, while Lansdowne would travel to Harrison.

7:00 EST - Jacksonville Armada vs Charleston Battery

Jacksonville Armada (NASL)

Club History
Announced on July 25, 2013, the Armada was the only expansion side to join the league in 2015, led by the ownership collective Sunshine Soccer Group and club president Steve Livingstone. The team chose to play at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville and quickly established themselves in the top tier of NASL attendances, although they didn't do as well on the field. The Armada finished last in both the Fall Season and combined table in 2015. The team fired its first manager, José Luis Villarreal, after attempting to give him a co-managerial role with Guillermo Hoyos. The club later fired Hoyos after giving him a contract through 2019 months earlier.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Jacksonville Armada are 0-1 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. Their debut last year went off the rails, as a lackluster outfit was soundly beaten, 3-0, away from home by the Richmond Kickers. Armada fans will be thankful that they'll play in Jacksonville this time around, as the team has never won an away game.
Current Team
Even with former U.S. goalkeeper Tony Meola installed as head coach, it's been another struggle for the Armada so far. Jacksonville currently sit at the bottom of the NASL, with one win in eight games played. The team has dropped four of its last five matches, and sold its star midfielder, Richie Ryan, to Miami FC (albeit for nearly $1 million). Matt Fondy, the 2015 USL MVP with Lousville has failed to acclimate to his new surroundings, and is still waiting for his first NASL goal. Pascal Millien and Mechack Jérôme will both be on international duty with Haiti in the Copa América. Although that paints a bleak picture, there are still some bright spots that could carry Jacksonville on Wednesday. Junior Sandoval has shown his propensity for sharpshooting, Kevan George has been a machine in midfield, and Patrick Otte sprung a surprise by taking over the right back position.

Charleston Battery (USL)

Club History
Founded in 1993, Charleston make up another integral part of the USL old guard. In 1999, the team built Blackbaud Stadium (now MUSC Health Stadium), the first non-MLS soccer-specific stadium. The Battery have been crowned league champions on four occasions, and in four different leagues: The USISL Pro League (1996), the USL A-League (2003), the USL Second Division (2010), and USL Pro (2012). Charleston has a record of taking in Cuban soccer migrants, such as Osvaldo Alonso (now with Seattle Sounders), Ariel Martinez (Miami FC), and Odisnel Cooper (Charleston). In February, the team was bought by B Sports Entertainment, an investment group led by local tech executives.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Charleston Battery are 28-16 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. They reached the semifinal round before bowing out both in 1999 and 2004. Their 2008 run to the final remains the last time a non-MLS team got to the championship game. Alas, one goal wasn't enough as the plucky underdogs fell 2-1 at the final hurdle. Last year, Charleston were 4-2 down in extra time against Orlando City, came back to 4-4, but lost agonizingly on penalty kicks. This year, lady luck was on their side. Following a shock loss to The Villages SC on penalty kicks, the Battery found they had advanced to Round 3 via forfeit, as their opposition had fielded an ineligible player.
Current Team
Charleston are once again competitive in the USL, right now sitting at fourth place in the Eastern Conference. It's been over two calendar years since the Battery have lost at home. They're led by on-loan Montreal Impact forward Romario Williams, who has six goals, the fourth-most in the USL. Taylor Mueller and Shawn Ferguson have been rock-solid at the back, and Maikel Chang (who, again, is a Cuban defector) has helped provide some creativity in midfield. The Battery have won three of their last four, but dropped a home game Saturday to Louisville.

The Matchup

In an interesting arrangement, we'll get to see one of the USL's hot teams take on an NASL bottom-feeder in what should be a hotly-contested affair. The Armada will host at Jacksonville University’s Southern Oak Stadium, and the game is free and open to the public. Jacksonville usually try to work the ball out of deep midfield in a 4-2-3-1, while Charleston try to attack the flanks, but specialize in set pieces. The prize for the winner is a home game against Orlando City.

7:30 EST - Chattanooga FC vs Harrisburg City Islanders

Chattanooga FC (NPSL)

Club History
Chattanooga FC have made a splash in the American soccer scene since its formation in 2009. A steadily growing fanbase and success on the pitch have gained Tennessee's fourth-biggest city a deserved notoriety. On the field, Chattanooga have won the NPSL Southeast Division each of the last four years, and five times in total. On four occasions it has lost in the NPSL championship game, but that hasn't deterred fans, over 18,000 of whom packed Finley Stadium for the 2015 final. Chattanooga FC and Detroit City are expected to challenge for the highest attendances this year outside of a professional soccer league.
U.S. Open Cup History
Chattanooga FC are 4-4 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. In 2014, they made history, becoming the first NPSL team to defeat a pro side after a 3-1 win over the USL Pro's Wilmington Hammerheads. In 2015, they beat Wilmington again. If they can repeat the feat this time around, they'll earn a club first - a match against MLS opposition.
Current Team
Chattanooga have started the new NPSL season how they left off the old one, with two straight wins out of the gate. Luke Winter, who led the team in scoring in league play in 2015, returns to score a few more in 2016. Against Reading United in the second round, Chatty often created chances from crosses, or worked the ball forward through hold-up play from a target striker.

Harrisburg City Islanders (USL)

Club History
Harrisburg's professional soccer team came into formation in 2003. The city itself is small (around 50,000 population) and generally post-industrial. Yet the fighting spirit of Harrisburg itself is reflected by the players who represent it. In 2007, the City Islanders won the USL Second Division championship, defeating the Richmond Kickers on penalty kicks. Since then, they've appeared in the USL Pro playoff final (2011, 2014), but have yet to repeat their incredible feat.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Harrisburg City Islanders are 17-9 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. They established a reputation as giant killers early on, defeating D.C. United in their first appearance (2007). In fact, Harrisburg has downed MLS opposition on five occasions, the last one coming in 2012 during a run to the quarterfinals. Last year, Harrisburg beat Reading United 3-0 before falling to the Rochester Rhinos at home. This year, a Bobby Warshaw goal sparked a 2-0 win over West Chester United.
Current Team
With top scorer Jason Plumhoff plucked away by FC Edmonton, Harrisburg have a tall task ahead of them if they want to avoid missing out on the playoffs for a second consecutive year. At the moment, Harrisburg sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, which (somehow) is only one spot off the playoffs. Jamaican Paul Wilson is on top of things so far, having scored four goals and provided three assists. Also looking to play important roles are former Philadelphia Union forward Aaron Wheeler and current Howler podcast star Bobby Warshaw.

The Matchup

Chattanooga FC are on the rise, and will have to feel as if they're in with a shout against one of USL's less marquee teams. Tickets are $7, and I'm sure the team will be trying to sell as many as possible to get the upset. Harrisburg, meanwhile, will have every motivation to advance: the winner plays at Philadelphia Union, the team which dumped the City Islanders as an affiliate in 2016.

7:30 EST - New York Cosmos vs Jersey Express

New York Cosmos (NASL)

Club History
The New York Cosmos brand is one of the greatest in all of world soccer, and its teams in the original NASL were arguably better than any American sides that have come before or since. Centered around players like Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, Franz Beckenbauer, and of course, the legendary Pelé, New York won five Soccer Bowls and became a global phenomenon. Since the club folded, there have been many attempts to revive it. This one is the first to get a real team on the field. The modern iteration of the Cosmos kicked off in the NASL Fall Season of 2013, won the championship the same year, and won it again in 2015 with Real Madrid legend Raúl at the helm.
U.S. Open Cup History
The New York Cosmos are 4-2 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. The original Cosmos didn't compete in the Open Cup, so this is where the current iteration has a chance to leave its mark. They've already made waves by beating cross-town rivals New York Red Bulls as well as New York City FC in consecutive years. Still, that's not enough. Snubbed by MLS, the Cosmos want their revenge by going all the way.
Current Team
After a rather paltry start, New York has picked up the pace yet again in the NASL. Since losing twice in a row in stoppage time, the Cosmos have won four out of five and can claim first place in the NASL heading into this weekend. Veteran Venezuelan midfielder Juan Arango has been the main man, and it is absolutely crucial he is healthy and ready to go for the Open Cup, especially with Niko Kranjčar out injured for the remainder of the Spring Season. And with Michael Lahoud sold to Miami FC, Danny Szetela and Adam Moffat must step up to protect the back line.

Jersey Express (PDL)

Club History
Jersey Express have played in the PDL since 2008, though their greatest successes have come over the past few years. Founded in 2007 as the Newark Ironbound Express, the team rebranded in 2011 and have been on the rise since. In 2014, Jersey were crowned Eastern Conference champions and made the national semi-finals. In 2015, they reached the Eastern Conference final.
U.S. Open Cup History
Jersey Express are 2-2 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. Like the Cosmos, they've only competed for the past two years. In the first, they fell at the first hurdle. But in 2015, they made a bit of a run, defeating Greek-American Atlas in Round 1 and New York Red Bulls II in Round 2. In Round 3, though the Cosmos posed too much of a challenge in a 3-0 defeat. This year, they're in the same spot, having beaten Clarkstown SC Eagles 2-1 and New York Pancyprian Freedoms 1-0, respectively.
Current Team
Jersey are off to a good start in the new PDL season, having beaten Ocean City 4-2 with four set piece goals. Led by center back Sylvain N’Guessan, the 2015 team MVP, as well as midfielder Chris Karcz, the club's all-time leading scorer, they'll try to navigate a tricky Mid Atlantic Division that includes fellow Open Cup competitors Reading United AC and New York Red Bulls U-23s.

The Matchup

In a rematch of last year's Round 3 victory for New York, Jersey will hope to keep the game a little closer this time around. They could benefit from a rotated Cosmos squad if last year is any precedent: players like Jimmy Mulligan and Haji Wright saw their some of their only minutes of the season in 2015 against Jersey. Another interesting dynamic at play comes via the fact that the match will be held at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. Johns University. Although the Cosmos are technically at home, Queens certainly isn't Long Island, and the players will have to adjust to new surroundings. The winner takes home a visit to NYCFC in Round 4.

7:30 EST - Carolina RailHawks vs Charlotte Independence

Carolina RailHawks (NASL)

Club History
History: Founded in 2006, Carolina was one of the breakaway members from the USL First Division that formed the NASL. The team's name is mean to represent both the rail lines that run directly across from the field and the hawks that are indigenous to the area. The RailHawks play their home games at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC. In 2015, the RailHawks' owners, Traffic Sports, were indicted in a FIFA corruption scandal, leading to the sale of the club to local tech entrepreneur Stephen Malik. The RailHawks' best finish came in 2010, in the temporary USSF Division 2 Professional League, where they reached the championship game.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Carolina RailHawks are 16-8 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. Of all the NASL teams, Carolina are perhaps the best-established giant-killers. That notoriety began in 2007 during a run to the semi-finals. It continued in 2012, 2013, and 2014; each year Carolina knocked out an L.A. Galaxy side that was dominant in MLS at the time.
Current Team
After opening up the season with four straight wins, Carolina are trying to salvage their Spring Season, which has slid into a horrible decline. At the moment, the RailHawks are in fifth place, and need to snap a four-match winless streak to get back into the mix. If they are to have any chance of doing that, the burden will be on the shoulders of star midfielder Ty Shipalane, who produces highlight reel goals (including this weak-footed curler from a few weeks back). Austin da Luz and Nazmi Albadawi also provide a heavy creative presence in midfield.

Charlotte Independence (USL)

Club History
Charlotte Independence were founded in 2014, and played their first season last year. The Independence have made overtures to MLS, but thus far have seen unsteady attendances and uneven play on the field. In 2015, Charlotte finished seventh in the Eastern Conference and failed to make the playoffs.
U.S. Open Cup History
Charlotte Independence are 3-1 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. Despite a rough inaugural USL season, Charlotte was more successful than any other league compatriot in the USOC. After knocking out the RailHawks away from home, an incredible Jorge Herrera goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution.
Current Team
Charlotte are enjoying a fine opening to the USL season, and are currently placed fifth in the Eastern Conference. Before a loss Saturday at Orlando City B, they'd gone six straight without a loss. Much of that prowess is due to the talents of a former RailHawk, Enzo Martinez, who has three goals and three Team of the Week appearances to his name. Other contributors include midfielder Yann Ekra, who had found earlier success in Harrisburg, and Caleb Calvert, the forward on loan from Colorado Rapids.

The Matchup

It's a tasty Tar Heel derby for the second year in a row in North Carolina. The RailHawks will come in looking for revenge, but will be without center back James Marcelin, who was called into Haiti's Copa America squad. The Independence, meanwhile, look to repeat the feat, but will have to do so without Calvert, who has been recalled by the Rapids. WakeMed Soccer Park has been a fortress for Carolina in the past, and on Wednesday evening it will turn into a battleground. The winner of this game will host the New England Revolution in Round 4.

7:30 EST - Tampa Bay Rowdies vs FC Cincinnati

Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL)

Club History
An original NASL team, the Rowdies won a championship in their first year (1975) and continued to impress until the league collapsed in 1985. The Rowdies kept playing in lower leagues until 1993. In 2008, the team was reborn again, with the vision of recreating its old glory days. However, because of legal problems, the team simply went by FC Tampa Bay until 2012, when the old moniker returned, along with an NASL title won on penalties over Minnesota Stars FC. In 2014, the team was purchased by St. Petersburg businessman Bill Edwards, who promised to take the Rowdies to the next level.
U.S. Open Cup History
The Tampa Bay Rowdies are 4-5 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. Their best showing came in 2013, where they beat cross-town rival VSI Tampa Bay, then upset a Seattle Sounders side that had been to the final each of the past four years. The past two years, though, have seen the Rowdies dumped on the first try in away games to USL teams (Orlando City and Pittsburgh Riverhounds, respectively).
Current Team
Although the Rowdies were built to compete for a title, at the moment, they sit in sixth place in the NASL standings, out of the Spring Season title race. Tom Heinemann, signed to be the star striker, has only scored two goals in seven games played, but he's still the team's biggest attacking threat. Michael Nanchoff and Eric Avila provide creativity in midfield, while Neil Collins and Tamika Mkandawire have made a great center back pairing. Freddy Adu has made the 18 once this season (rumor has it he's in the coach's doghouse), but new signing Joe Cole (yes, THAT Joe Cole) has come in and been a steadying presence.

FC Cincinnati (USL)

Club History
FC Cincinnati was founded in August of 2015 by a billionaire owner with an eventual goal of moving to MLS. Former USA star John Harkes was hired to be the head coach, and despite some initially shoddy marketing, the team has proved to be a hit. In fact, that's a bit of an understatement. Crowds in excess of 10,000 have been on hand for each of its first five home matches, and American soccer fans are paying attention.
U.S. Open Cup History
FC Cincinnati are 1-0 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. A Jimmy McLaughlin goal saw off Indy Eleven NPSL in a 2-1 victory, a happy ending to Cincy's inaugural Open Cup match. A win in Round 3 would set up an Ohio derby, which I'm sure fans would love to see.
Current Team
Buoyed by a six-match unbeaten streak, FCC currently find themselves in third place in the USL Eastern Conference. Former MLS prospect Sean Okoli has been invaluable in the attack, while center back Austin Berry's return to the U.S. has looked successful (an injury has taken him out of the last few games, but he's set to return soon). They've had a propensity to score highlight reel goals, but have recorded just two clean sheets in 11 matches (including that Open Cup game).

The Matchup

Cincinnati will have to overcome a tough Tampa Bay team in order to set up a derby match with the Columbus Crew. The Rowdies are offering free tickets before the day of the game, hoping to create an atmosphere that will propel them through to play an MLS team for the first time in three years. Berry is an injury worry for Cincinnati, as is Heinemann for Tampa Bay. It should be a good watch, because both of these clubs have huge ambitions, but only one of them will be able to book a ticket to Columbus for Round 4.

7:30 EST - Indy Eleven vs Louisville City

Indy Eleven (NASL)

Club History
After years of calls for a professional soccer team in Indianapolis from the Brickyard Battalion (the Eleven's main supporter group), the dream was finally realized in 2013. That year, legendary American soccer executive Peter Wilt announced that he would become the president of Indy Eleven, a team that started play in 2014. Despite struggles on the field, Indy Eleven became the first American soccer team to sell out all its home games in its inaugural home season. The Eleven are still yet to establish themselves as an NASL powerhouse, but have seen steady improvement.
U.S. Open Cup History
Indy Eleven are 1-2 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. In 2014, a 5-2 win over the Dayton Dutch Lions marked the first competitive win in club history. Last year, a rainy loss in extra time to Louisville spelled the end of head coach Juergen Sommer's time at the club.
Current Team
After two years of disappointment, this Eleven may finally be the team that brings joy to Indianapolis soccer fans. Indy are the only undefeated professional team in the United States, and find themselves second in the NASL with a game in hand on the leaders. A big part of that turnaround is due to a restructured defense. 39-year-old goalkeeper Jon Busch has never looked so young, Nemanja Vuković has converted into a dangerous right back, and the Greg Janicki-Colin Falvey partnership in the middle has proved formidable. Look for local product Dylan Mares to bring some energy to the midfield, and Irish-Libyan striker Éamon Zayed to continue a streak of scoring in big games.

Louisville City (USL)

Club History
When Orlando City moved to MLS prior to the 2014-15 season, its USL license shifted to Kentucky. As was true with Indy, Louisville had a supporters' group (the Coopers) prior to the formation of their team. In its first season, Louisville City delighted crowds at Louisville Slugger Field with a strong team that finished second in the USL Eastern Conference and reached the league's semi-finals.
U.S. Open Cup History
Louisville City are 3-1 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup. 2015 marked a memorable entrance, a defeat of Indy Eleven setting up a match against the Chicago Fire. Louisville held its own against the Fire, but eventually fell 0-1 in extra time. This year's run almost ended as quickly as it started, but Louisville were able to hold of Detroit City in a penalty shootout.
Current Team
At first glance, it looked as if 2016 might bring trouble to Louisville City. League MVP Matt Fondy and Defender of the Year Bryan Burke both moved to Jacksonville, so someone had to make a step up. As it turns out, that man has been Chandler Hoffman. Like Fondy, Hoffman is a striker who couldn't quite find his niche in MLS, but he's started off the year with seven goals in 10 matches. Louisville City currently sit in first place in the USL Eastern Conference, and will feel they have every chance of winning their first USL title.

The Matchup

Although I have every right to take a subjective view on this match, I do believe that, objectively, it is the game to watch in Round 4. Two of the hottest teams in lower league soccer, a slight rivalry, a good atmosphere, and everything to play for. Indy come in seeking revenge. They have a deep squad, but have injury concerns over Brad Ring, Siniša Ubiparipović, Lovel Palmer, and Greg Janicki mean others will have to step up. Louisville City will be without the suspended Conor Shanosky, and goalkeeper Scott Goodwin has left the team to go to medical school. It should all make for a cracking game in Indianapolis at the Mike. If Indy win, they'll travel to play the Chicago Fire. If Louisville win, they'll host Chicago in Lexington.

2016.05.28 01:54 TheMonsieur U.S. Open Cup Round 3 Previews: Fort Lauderdale Strikers vs Richmond Kickers, Rochester Rhinos vs Lansdowne Bhoys, Jacksonville Armada vs Charleston Battery

On Wednesday, June 1, the third round of the U.S. Open Cup gets underway. This is the final round before MLS teams enter the competition, and the last chance for underdogs to prove their case. In the days leading up to matchday, I'll set out to do previews of each game to get you up to date. (If I can handle that many!)
Don't forget to enter the USOC Pick'em contest!

Away wins at (then-league leaders) Carolina RailHawks and Rayo OKC have put them into 6th place, and they're on the road again at Ottawa Fury tonight.

At the moment of writing, the Kickers could use an energy boost, as they're sitting at sixth place in the USL Eastern Conference.

The defending USL champions are seventh in the USL Eastern Conference, but have a nearly perfect record at home.

Last night, Lansdowne Bhoys won the Cosmopolitan Soccer League title for the third season on the trot.

Jacksonville currently sit second from bottom in the NASL, propped up only by expansion side Miami FC. Going into this weekend, the team has dropped four straight matches, and sold its star midfielder, Richie Ryan, to Miami for nearly $1 million.

Charleston are once again competitive in the USL, right now sitting at third place in the Eastern Conference. The Battery are riding a three-match win streak going into tomorrow's home game against Louisville.
